Creating and Exporting our Mood Board

Now is time to arrange our ideas into a Moodboard. We will first create a layout where our images, colours and texts will go, and then we will fill those spaces with our assets. Finally, we will export our file for presentation and print.

Setting Guides and Creating a Layout

Synopsis: InDesign has excellent smart guides that help us position our content on the canvas. Regardless, sometimes we need additional directions to work more efficiently. After setting our guides, we will create our layout using frames.

Duration: 5 minutes

Shortcuts:

  • To erase all your guides, go to View > Grids & Guides > Delete all guides on a spread.
  • To view a preview of your document, press W.

Best Practices:

  • Use InDesign to arrange and layout your assets/content.
  • Do not use InDesign to create logos, illustrations or edit photos.

Working With Frames:

The tools used to create Frames are located in the toolbox and are:

  • Type tool: contains text and connects text frames so text can flow from one frame to another.
  • Frame tools: used to mask parts of the image.
  • Shape tools: used for shapes that can be filled with colours.
  • Alignment tools and layer order

Creating our Moodboard

Synopsis: We have designed our moodboard with placeholder frames first, and now we are ready to fill it with text and images. In this step, we will also install our selected fonts.

Duration: 10 minutes

Shortcuts:

  • The shortcut to place images in frames is cmd/ctrl+D

Exporting our Moodboard

Synopsis: And now we are ready to export our moodboard. We will export it in two versions, our work file and a client deliverable.

Duration: 3 minutes

Deliverables

Your instructor will tell you what the deliverables for this project are, but they will most likely include:

  • One or both of the exported .pdf files
  • The .indd file.
